Something that has confused me somewhat

One thing that confuses me, a little, is that some of the people seem to say that, no matter what you do, the ability of your spirit ring won't have variations, while others say that what spirit ring ability you get is determined by what kind and what rank of spirit beast you kill. For example, Grandmaster said that spirit ring variation is impossible.

By this, does he mean that after you get a spirit ring, with an attached spirit ring ability, the spirit ring ability won't change?

Or does he mean that the spirit ring ability was always going to be that particular ability? Or like, there's only nine abilities for each spirit, and which one you gain access to (at each rank, decreasing the number of available abilities by one) has everything to do with the spirit beast you hunt?

I think what he means is that someone with a particular spirit will always get the same ability from the same spirit beast, with only the ability strength varying with the the ring's age. So if there was, theoretically, another Blue Silver Grass ability user gaining a Datura Snake ring, he'd gain the same ability that Tang San gained from it. But if someone with a different spirit gained that ring, its effect would be something more suited to that particular spirit, though most likely nothing totally different.

At least, that's my interpretation of it.

From what i understood the spirit itself of a person after acquiring spirit rings can change (i.e have a variation) while the spirit rings themselves can't change (like getting stronger 10years->100years or change affinity, type etc) the abilities can be instead strenghtened with higher rank and but can't acquire grand other effects

You're kind of right. Variation refers to the spirit itself and spirits are determined at birth. Ma (fatty) is an example of this. his spirit is a variation to a chicken spirit which kind of transformed it into a chicken phoenix. What master was talking about with Flandar and Wuji was how they thought the spirit ring caused Tangs blue-silver grass to convert into a variant spirit which was wrong. The ability given off by the rings can vary however if 2 nearly identical spirits absorb the same type of spirit ring from 2 spirits at the same age their ability can be the same. The hammer bro's are an example of this however I don't think we're going to see anyone else with the same spirits or abilities in the future.

Lastly Once you get a ring your ability wont change however they do strengthen as the spirit master levels up. A well defined example is Zhu's first spirit ring ability, it increases her speed by 100% and an extra 1% with each level after 10.
